About Us

The Carolina Beekeeping Club at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers students an opportunity to engage with pollinator health on multiple levels. The club is dedicated to supporting honey bees and other pollinators through direct action, educational initiatives, and outreach. Our organization maintains four honey bee colonies on UNC's campus located at Battle Grove. Throughout the year, students in the club lead projects and events that promote a more sustainable and pollinator-friendly future for Carolina and beyond.

Membership is available to individuals from any academic discipline, and prior experience is not required. Whether your academic focus is economics, biology, psychology, public health, or you are simply interested in learning something new, you will quickly discover that the study of bees intersects with all fields at Carolina.

Meet the Team

Our History

Founded in 2016, the Carolina Beekeeping Club began as a small group of students passionate about pollinators and sustainability. What started with one hive has grown into a campus wide movement, redefining what impact looks like.

Almost a decade later, we have four colonies and over 200 club members, with even more support in the local community. Working with businesses like Bee Downtown for honey harvesting and campus initiatives like Carolina Cupboard to help combat food insecurity, the beekeeping club continually fosters strong communal ties that work to improve people's lives.

Protect

We protect pollinators and their habitats through sustainable beekeeping, research, and habitat restoration. From collecting internal hive temperatures to see the impact of urban hot spots to planting native trees across campus, we work to strengthen ecosystems that sustain both pollinators and people.

Educate

We educate students and the community about the vital role of pollinators in our environment. Through hive tours, classroom workshops, and outreach events, we connect science with experience — turning curiosity into understanding and awareness into action.

Inspire

We inspire our campus and community to create meaningful change. By leading projects, building partnerships, and fostering community, we show that small actions like caring for a hive can help build a more sustainable and connected future for all.

Our Vision

We envision a future where humans and pollinators thrive together. By advancing education, research, and collaboration at Carolina, we aim to turn knowledge into action, showing that protecting pollinators is protecting our future.

Carolina Beekeeping Club works with the student body and local community to educate, protect, and inspire people to engage with both honey bees and native pollinators.

Visit Our Campus Beehives

Carolina’s own beehives are located in Battle Grove, nestled in the main part of campus where students, faculty, and visitors can experience pollinators up close. They pollinate our campus, contribute to hands-on education, and symbolize Carolina’s commitment to sustainability.
